March and Rally in Charlotte to Remember Michael Brown, Jonathan Ferrell

Posted: Updated:

A small group of people marched in Uptown Charlotte around Marshall Park late Saturday morning chanting, “Hands up. Don't shoot. Hands up. Don't shoot.”

The goal of the rally was to keep two cases in the forefront: that of Michael Brown, the unarmed teenager shot and killed by police in Ferguson, Missouri three weeks ago and the case of Jonathan Ferrell, another unarmed man shot and killed by a Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer last year.

Kevin Jenkins, one of the rally organizers, said, “I wanted us all to get in one space so we can start networking.” Jenkins said the rally is a starting point to come up with ideas about how to improve the relationship between the community and police.

Andrea Reynolds lives in Harrisburg. She came out to the rally. Reynolds said, “We're just coming out for support for peace and justice.”

She has a 19-year old close to the same age as Michael Brown. Reynolds said, “You're just afraid that your son may not come home like Michael Brown and the other guys, so yes, I am afraid every time he leaves out.”

Reynolds said she was heartbroken when she heard about what happened to Brown. She said, “My thought was they shot him down like a dog. That was my first thought.”

She said she hopes events like Saturday's march help people remember what happened in Ferguson, Missouri. Reynolds said, “A young man's life was taken away.” She added, “It is a big deal.”
