School lockdown lifted after gunshots, manhunt in Beach Park

BEACH PARK, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) - The Lake County Sheriff's office is investigating a report of shots fired in north suburban Beach Park Friday morning which forced two schools to cancel bus service and put the district in a soft lockdown.

The lockdown was lifted about 11:30 a.m., when police called off their manhunt, the Lake County News-Sun is reporting.

Morning bus service for Oak Crest and Howe schools was cancelled because of the police activity in the area, school officials said. All five schools were put on the lockdown for precautionary measures, according to the school district.

Nancy Wagner, superintendent of Beach Park Community Consolidated School District 3, said the sheriff's office notified the district at 7:45 a.m. of a manhunt near their elementary schools.

Lake County Sheriff's Sgt. Sara Balmes said the situation began as a domestic incident. A man inside a home near the intersection of Green Bay and Wadsworth roads fired multiple rounds inside the home, which was occupied by multiple people, she said.

After firing the shots, the suspect ran away. Police said he was picked up by someone and left the area, which resulted in the end of the lockdown.

No one is in custody and no one was injured, Balmes said.
