C-DOT: Area Where West Charlotte High School Students Hit By Cars "High Accident Location"

Posted: Updated:
The area where two West Charlotte High School students were hit by cars this week is considered a "High Accident Location," according to the Charlotte Department of Transportation. The agency has named the intersection of Beatties Ford Road and LaSalle Street number 20 on its list of high accident locations.

CMPD says it plans to send officers out to the area next week to talk with drivers about safety and pedestrians about using the crosswalks. C-DOT says there have been three other crashes involving pedestrians along this section of Beatties Ford Road over the last 4.5 years.

C-DOT says anytime there's a pedestrian crash they investigate to see if any improvements can be made. The agency did an evaluation earlier this year and says it found most of the pedestrian crashes happened because people didn't use the crosswalks or intersections.

CMPD says around 6:40 Friday morning 16 year old D'Nea Watson was walking in the direction of West Charlotte High School when she went to cross Beatties Ford Road and was hit by a car. Watson was transported by MEDIC to CMC with very serious injuries. Police say Watson did not use a crosswalk to cross the road.

Earlier this week on Aug. 25, Jennifer Crystal Tejada, a 16-year-old student was hit while crossing Beatties Ford. According to a CMPD incident report, she was 96 feet away from a crosswalk, but did not use it. She was taken to the hospital with severe injuries, but has since been upgraded to fair condition.

Friday morning, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools issued the following statement:

"This week, the first week of a new school year, two Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools students have been struck by automobiles off campus in separate incidents. These tragic events stress the importance of road safety for motorists and students. We ask that motorists take extra care when driving near school campuses. We encourage parents to speak with their children about looking both ways when crossing streets. Our thoughts are with both students and their families"
