Rowan-Salisbury Schools Roll Out Take-Home Laptops for Students

Posted: Updated:

The Rowan-Salisbury School System plans to put either a laptop or an iPad in the hands of every student in the district by the end of the school year. According to the district, devices for Kindergarten through second graders will be used just for the classroom, and 3rd-12th graders will be allowed to take the devices home.

RSS says it spent roughly $11 million for a lease agreement with Apple using existing funds to pay for the technology. The district's Director of Digital Technology says the plan is to refresh the cycle of devices and keep up with changing technology after three years.

McKenzie Upright, a freshman at the Early College, is happy to have a computer of her own to take home. She said , “It definitely is better because I don't have to fight over the laptop, so I don't have to fight with my siblings.” Upright added, “The work I can do on it is a better quality.”

Students are pleased that the laptops are much lighter than books, but it doesn't even compare with the possibilities students can explore in a digital universe. Deven Jahnke, a freshman at the Early College, said, “It definitely opened up a whole new world for me. I like the idea of being able to take nothing and create anything that I want to.”

Andrew Smith, Director of Digital Innovation at RSS said, “Rowan-Salisbury has a very diverse population, both in ethnicity and in socio-economic status, so we're leveling that digital divide and allowing every student to have access to a device that allows them to learn anywhere and everywhere.”

Some high schools in the district have received MacBook Airs, and the district says the remaining high schools should receive the devices in the next several weeks. And later in the school year, middle and elementary schools are set to receive iPads.
