NFL Announces Stiffer Domestic Violence Policy

Posted: Updated:

The NFL announced sweeping new changes in its policy on punishment of domestic violence on Thursday. Commissioner Roger Goodell published a letter announcing that any NFL employee involved in domestic violence would be banned for at least a year upon a second offense.

This announcement comes in the wake of several incidents involving NFL players and domestic violence this summer, including the high-profile case of Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice.

The new policy states that anyone involved in assault, battery, domestic violence or sexual assault that involves physical force will be subject to suspension without pay for six games upon first offense. A second offense would result in banishment from the league for at least a year, with the league having the option to reinstate if it sees fit.

The commissioner admitted that the league had not taken a tough enough stance on domestic violence in the past. Critics have said the two game suspension was not enough for Rice, who was caught on camera dragging his fiance out of an elevator after an altercation.

"At times, however, and despite our best efforts, we fall short of our goals," Goodell wrote. "We clearly did so in response to a recent incident of domestic violence.”

Carolina Panthers defensive end Greg Hardy was found guilty of assaulting a female and communicating threats earlier this year. His lawyers have appealed that decision. Hardy has not been suspended by the league or the Panthers as his case is still ongoing. He's set to go to trial in November.

Goodell placed the blame for recent responses on his shoulders.

“Simply put, we have to do better,” he said. “And we will."
