Thieves use stolen forklift to steal ATM

Posted: Updated:

Police are investigating an incident in Fayetteville where they say several thieves stole an ATM with a stolen forklift.

Surveillance video, mounted just above the ATM, shows a forklift ramming into the 2,000 pound machine. The forklift takes the ATM out from its foundation and picks it up.

The Delta Credit Union ATM was loaded into the back of a red pick-up truck that was reported stolen out of Henry County the day before.

Police say the thieves got the forklift from outside a Wendy's restaurant being renovated.

According to police, two or three men are behind this and they think the thieves already knew how to drive a forklift.

“Whether they honed their skills doing this or one of them actually worked on a construction crew, that's something we're investigating,” said Lt. Mike Whitlow with the Fayetteville Police Department.

In the past few months, forklifts have been used to steal ATMs in Coweta County, Morrow and Peachtree City.

Police say some ATM machines have GPS devices installed so authorities can track them down.
