In 1889, a reunion was held in Newton. The gathering consisted of community members rallying to support Confederate veterans.

"It started with Confederate veterans, but it very quickly followed with World War I and then World War II and today we have men being honored for their service in Afghanistan,” said Melinda Herzog, executive director, Historical Association of Catawba County. “The community wanted to raise funds to help support the marking of graves in the community. They also, many of the soldiers didn't receive pensions, so they were helping to raise some level of funding to help support them, especially their widows."

Now, 125 years later, the event is something people look forward to each year.

"Some people that's moved away, put on their calendars, they come back home this week,” said Wayne Dellinger, chairman, Soldiers Reunion. “And it makes it special to a lot of people."

Thursdays parade started at 5 p.m. and lasted until 7 p.m. Dellinger said he expected thousands of people to attend the annual reunion.

“It brings the community together,” said Pam Catena, veteran. “It gives a lot of recognitions to the veterans, either old and young. Without our veterans and the support of the community, this parade wouldn't exist."

The Catawba County Museum of History in downtown Newton is celebrating the 125th Anniversary of the Soldiers Reunion with a display feature photos from parades past.
