New York's daring Instagrammers

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Pull out your smartphone on any given day, tap on Instagram and you'll find a lot of selfies. But while the rest of us clog our feeds with our best pouty faces, a group of photographers scales and then hangs off bridges and buildings in a contest to produce the most daring photograph in New York City.

"It's more of like a challenge," a man identifying himself by only his Instagram handle, @lastsuspect, said. "It's more like graffiti back in the day, where it's like who can get the highest spot and whoever does it better, I guess, wins nothing basically, but they win."

If that 28-year-old sounds skeptical of the effort and risk -- physical and legal -- involved in capturing some of the pictures you'll see in the video above, it's because he's already done it.

"I don't have to do it anymore," Last Suspect said.

At last count, more than 52,000 people follow Last Suspect on Instagram for a perspective of New York City they can't find anywhere else.

"I was pretty good at art and then started doing graffiti and then got into photography," he said.

Last Suspect stopped climbing to places he wasn't allowed when he joined "The K Club" -- Instagram parlance for earning more than 10,000 followers -- and landed a full-time job taking pictures for a social media advertising agency.

"It's more the younger kids," he said. "They're like 17, climbing stuff, trying to get their followers."

And their gimmick works: 33,000 people follow one of those 17-year-olds. He calls himself Humza Deas on Instagram (@humzadeas) and posts pictures of his feet dangling off the highest points on seemingly every bridge in New York City.

"I don't want to associate myself with that side anymore," Last Suspect said, "so I just stay with the people who stay on the ground."

A New York Magazine story called Last Suspect, Humza Deas, and others like them the "Outlaw Instagrammers of New York City." The younger members of that posse may find that gang name flattering, but Last Suspect says he'd like to distance himself from his bandit reputation.

"I think it's more the name that categorizes me as a bad guy," he said.

Last Suspect says his followers should expect his feed to "stay more street" going forward. But while he's sworn off the climbing and creeping that brought him business and praise and followers, he doesn't discourage others looking to replicate his success from taking some risks.

"At a certain extent, it's worth it," he said.

Police say they're investigating a large brawl that broke out at the end of a wedding reception held over the weekend at a suburban Buffalo country club. Officials tell local media that seven different police agencies were called in late Saturday to break up the fight at the Orchard Park Country Club. Officers say dozens of the approximately 200 guests were involved in the melee, which broke out after a member of the wedding party was tossed off the premises for inappropriate behavior.
