New Changes to Old Part of Uptown Off North Tryon Street

Posted: Updated:
There's a new push this week to revitalize parts of North Tryon Street in Uptown.

Over the next few months, consultants will talk to business owners and those who live and work there to find out how to make changes to the area.

The parts of redevelopment include the stretch of North Tryon from 5th Street to 13th Street, and between Poplar and Caldwell Streets.

Laura Smith with the Foundation for the Carolinas hopes to see some changes, and says it'll be a win win for everyone.

“For the people who live here and work, there are hopefully other entertainment options. Things like grocery stores, there'll be parks, and other amenities,” said Smith.

The area is home to around 10,000 and more than 30,000 people work there. But Smith says it's mostly focused on the south stretch of North Tryon.

“There are not a lot of nightside things to do besides Blumenthal. The biggest need is what to do at night time here. “I'd love to see more retail and come to the city to hang out. I'd like to bring friends to hang out and maybe a coffee shop,” said David Docusen.

Once consultants get the green light, the changes could take up to a decade to implement.

“The Carolina theatre development, the housing authority is looking at hall house, you have the new park in the First Ward. There will be key projects that the community will see right away,” said Smith.

“Maybe more restaurants – and develop the area. I'd love to see the Carolina theatre come back,” said Docusen.

The Blue Line is also extending into that area and into the University Area.

This could bring more students to that part of town as well.

“You know when you think about the impact that it has had on the south side with the number of riders. The growth will be exponential. Also the number of students who will have immediate access to come here it's going to be transformational for North Tryon,” said Smith.

The cost of the study is around $400,000 and the study wraps up next July.
