Nation's Top Railroad Official Visits Harrisburg as Rail Construction Continues

Posted: Updated:
The nation's top railway official visited Harrisburg Thursday afternoon to applaud progress being made on a rail project that will connect North Carolina's major cities. People living in Harrisburg have been dealing with construction detours as part of the massive railroad project designed to improve service for both passenger and freight trains.

In several towns across the state, the Department of Transportation is building bridges so that the roads will go over the railroad tracks, and they can lay down uninterrupted double tracks from Greensboro to Charlotte. When all the entire project is done, it will mean drivers won’t have to stop at as many railroad crossings, train passengers should be able to get to their destinations faster

Joe Szabo, Federal Railroad Administrator said Amtrak service is the fastest growing travel mode in America. Szabo said, “Ridership since 2007 on the Piedmont line is up nearly 240%. Young people today are driving automobiles less and less. Vehicle miles traveled are down by 29% and their use of inter-city passenger rail and transit is up a whopping 40%, and so this is the future we have to plan for.”

The DOT says Stallings Road in Harrisburg is probably going to be closed until October for construction on the rail project. Hickory Ridge Road, according to officials, should open up right before school starts back.
