State Republicans bypass flood talk for wolf hunting

Posted: Updated:
LANSING, Mich. (WJBK) - While the state was trying to put the flooded Detroit freeway system back together again, the Michigan Senate was in session for one day to permit the hunting of wolves.

The senate Democratic leader complains that the water problems in Detroit are scary and Republicans?  They're talking about wolves

"There are a lot of people who are suffering right now and for us to come in on this one day that we are in session and debate wolves is ridiculous,"  Sen. Gretchen Whitmer said.

"What signal does that send to folks back home?" asked Fox 2's Tim Skubick.

"It's a 'let them eat cake' attitude," she said.

The senate GOP leader, Randy Richardville,  informed of Whitmer's criticism dismisses it as "political wind blowing."   He says the vote on wolves is important.

Whitmer and others are trying to ban the hunting of wolves and they have placed two proposals on the November ballot, to do that.

But she contends the Republicans want to circumvent the right of the citizens to decide the wolf hunting issue.

"Republicans are not circumventing anybody's rights but are moving to do what the majority of citizens want," Richardville said. "Which is a wolf hunt."

"We are responsible to all 10 million people," Richardville said. "It's my job to do what they want and that includes a scientific wolf hunt."

"The other side is a vocal minority?" Skubick asked.

"In some cases, it is," Richardville said.

The Michigan House will consider this later this month in Lansing.
