Valley entertainers remember Robin Williams

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX (KSAZ) - Robin Williams performed here in the valley as a stand-up comedian several times, and always to packed crowds.

A concert promoter said when Robin Williams did standup in Arizona they had to add shows for him because it was the hottest ticket in town.

One local comedian said the beauty of Robin Williams was that he never held back.

"Your face hurt because he was that funny," said Danny Zelisko.

Phoenix concert promoter, Danny Zelisko, worked with Robin Williams before.

"He did great concert business, we had him here several times at Dodge Theater, Comerica, every show sold out, every show was great, he was the easiest guy to work with," said Zelisko.

He vividly remembers one conversation with the comedian and actor.

"He said "alright, excuse me guys; I got to go on stage," we turned around and no further than five feet away, all of a sudden hell broke loose. Tables falling over, glasses breaking, it was like a pack of dogs chasing us out of the club, it was him with an imaginary pack of dogs, it was him but we really thought a pack of dogs were chasing us," he said.

He started as a standup comic, yes it's something not a lot of people who know him from his movies would know," said Ryan Goldfinger.

Ryan Goldfinger is the manager at the Tempe Improv Club.

"It's pretty devastating to the comedy community, and to the world as a whole," said Goldfinger.

"As a comedian, as an actor, someone who wants to entertain, he was the pinnacle you know," said Jill Bryan.

Comedian Jill Bryan saw Williams perform live about a year and a half ago.

"My brother has a TV show, Robin was on the show, and he did a little standup, just ad-libbed, he had his cell phone and was video taping the audience having fun, full of energy, just a spirit you wish you could capture," said Bryan.

Ryan said the death came as a shock to many because you think of comedians as funny people who are always, "on". She says it's not that way, and you just don't know who is struggling with what.
