PHOENIX (KSAZ) - At St. Catherine of Siena Catholic School, teachers report to class Tuesday, but they're scrambling to find how they can replace five air conditioner units damaged by thieves.

"They ripped it all apart.. you can see everything was taken," said St. Catherine's principal, Robert Rogers.

Principal Rogers say it happened on a stormy night in the back of the building.  Thieves broke in and stole copper from five large AC units, which are worth several thousands of dollars -- not something easy to replace for this community.

The school located near Central Avenue and Alta Vista Road serves many children who couldn't otherwise afford a private Catholic education.

"90 percent of them get some sort of financial aid to come here, so we want to help them out, but when something like this happens to the infrastructure here, it really puts us behind," explained Rogers.  "This school is very important to the community, we want to give them good spiritual education, good academic education, so this is a bedrock for south Phoenix."

School leaders wanting to help are now hoping for a little assistance of its own.

Teachers report to the classroom on August 12.  School starts August 19.
