Mecklenburg County, N.C. (WJZY) -- The Latin American Coalition made a presentation to Mecklenburg County Commissioners Tuesday night.

The Coalition asked for the County to create a City-County Identification card. This would allow undocumented immigrants to receive a valid picture ID.

We spoke with the Coalition.

“Charlotte Mecklenburg has an opportunity to provide municipal IDs to allow people access to a valid ID so they can prove they are who they say they are.

It will help police know who they're dealing with. It will also help parents who want to pick their kids up from school,” said Lacey Williams.

Not everyone agrees with the proposal for a City-County ID. Mecklenburg County Commissioner Matthew Ridenhour is one of them.

“It's going to be hard for me to support a proposal which is going to divert resources from teachers, CMS, from parks, and health and human services.

We have a method for getting IDs in this community, but you have to be here legally. If you break that number one rule, there are consequences to that action,” said Commissioner Matthew Ridenhour.

What's the next step for this municipal ID?

“The next step is talking individually to County Commissioners and with City Council members. We also need to get them to talk together,” said Lacey Williams with the Latin American Coalition.

“I got an email saying the County manager is meeting with the city and CMS in the next couple of weeks to discuss this. That would be the next step: get those three bodies together and talk about the proposal and see what we can do,” said Commissioner Ridenhour.

I'm Caroline Fountain. We'll keep you posted on the developments of the municipal ID and if it gets the green light.
