Union County Board of Commissioners have unanimously approved a 105.67 acre property to be rezoned off Airport and Weddington Road.

The vote was scheduled to take place on Aug. 18 but was amended into Monday night's agenda following a public hearing.

The planning board had voted against the project saying that it goes against the county's land-use plan.

"This rezoning would almost double the amount of units allowed per acre, from two, to almost four units per acre," Division Director of the Planning Board Richard Black said.

Black added that the county is working on a new land-use plan, that should be ready come November. Black said that this rezoning plan could fall under the new guidelines, but under the current system, the plan is not appropriate.

A round-a-bout is under construction close to the site that should help alleviate some traffic congestion.

The area will be in the Monroe High cluster. Union County Public Schools has said that Monroe will approach its cap level by 2017.

From Union County…

“The R-20 district is designed to accommodate single family residential development (20,000 square foot lots) at low to medium densities. The PUD 14 district is designed to combine the characteristics of three zoning districts, R-10, R-6 and B-2. R-10 (10,000 square foot lots) districts are designed to accommodate single-family residential at medium densities. R-6 (6,000 square foot lots) districts are designed to accommodate single-family, two-family and multi-family developments at higher densities. B-2 (community business) is designed to accommodate smaller scale commercial development in rural areas.”
