There is no elixir to open up Snyder's lock-jaw

Posted: Updated:
LANSING, Mich. (WJBK) - Not bad for a guy who four years ago was known as Rick who?  But there was Gov. Rick Snyder in the Big Apple holding court with the heavy-hitters from the Bloomberg News.

He was there to explain the Detroit bankruptcy story but you know how journalists are, somebody move the subject to gay marriage.

What was the governor’s position?

He disclosed that he had one alright.

So what was it?

He blurted back it was private and would stay that way, thank you very much.

One thing you quickly learn from covering this governor, if he gets a bad case of lock-jaw, there is no elixir to open him up.  For-get-it!

But is that a political liability as he moves into this election year?

EPIC-MRA pollster Bernie Porn figures if you’re a voter interested in a host of wedge issues, you might want to know how the governor feels before you cast a vote.

So what about that governor, has anybody on the campaign trail ever told him they want him to take a stance on this controversial issue or that?

He pauses for a second and offers, “No.  Not really.”

What they are more likely to utter is, “I may not agree with you on everything but keep doing it.”

Pollster Porn counters, “I think voters expect the governor to come out and explain….”

The governor volleys back, “there is a finite amount of time and resources” and it’s his job to set priorities and fiddling around with issues that have nothing to do with his economic agenda is basically a waste of his time or as he would put it in Snyder-eze, “It has no value.”

Back to Mr. Porn. “Saying that’s not on my economic agenda, that may not be the issue that is driving any number of people in terms of making their decision and if he refuses to answer, that is not benefiting him.”

This governor seems to care less.

He acknowledged awhile back that he understood correspondents got frustrated by his nifty little two-step around a variety of questions, but then in blunt terms he sort of smiled saying, it was not his job to help us make news.

And while that may have been a shocker for him to stiff the big shooters at the Bloomberg News, it’s SOP around these parts.

And will the voters give a hoot if he doesn’t change?
