Federal sting ends in gunfire in Highland Park

HIGHLAND PARK, Mich. (WJBK) -

A traffic stop resulted in a tense scene between federal agents and a pair of men suspected  to have illegal assault rifles in Highland Park.

A task force of ATF and FBI agents who had previously set up a meet with two men, suspected to have AK-47s and AR-15s in their Chevrolet Cavalier, began to move in. The traffic stop was made by Highland Park Police car which had, gotten the go-ahead from the agents, in the area of Oakland and Victor about 7:30 p.m. Friday.

The car rammed the federal agents vehicle and the driver reportedly opened fire with a handgun. The agents returned fire, injuring one of the occupants in the arm through the car's front window.

One of the suspects attempted to flee, but was tackled and arrested in a nearby alley. The second occupant is also under arrest at this time.

UPDATE >>>> Fox 2 has learned that the suspect who was armed may not have fired first before fleeing.

Guns were discovered inside the Cavalier.
