Man Killed In Police-Involved Shooting, 2nd Suspect On The Loose

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA - Police killed a burglary suspect they say fired at them first, and a second man is wanted in this case.

It happened at a home in the 900 block of Wakeling Street in Northeast Philadelphia just before 1 a.m. Friday.

FOX'S 29'S Dave Schratwieser reports.

According to police, the couple who lives in the home happened to be out for the night. When they came home just past midnight the two men with guns, hiding in the dark in bushes near the front door, forced the couple inside.

The couple had set their burglar alarm earlier, before leaving. That alarm went off when all four went to the house. The alarm company called police.

One of the burglars answered the door when police arrived at the home and pretended to be the owner. The officer asked for ID, however, and the woman came to the door. She apparently said things were OK but somehow indicated there was trouble.

When the officer asked her to step outside, that's when the suspect allegedly pulled the gun and fired first.

"The suspect actually fired two to three times at the officer, didn't hit him. But the officer fired his Glock multiple times and did strike the suspect, knocking the suspect to the ground," said Police Capt. George Fuchs. "This officer did a great job. He was very professional, used good police training. As I said he requested identification immediately, he sensed that something wasn't right when he saw the female, and he just acted upon the threat."

The officer's bullets struck and killed the suspect. The commissioner says he has 12 prior arrests for robbery, theft and weapons offenses.

The second suspect escaped out the rear of the home and vanished. Police found the suspect’s car a short distance away and seized it.

“We’re looking for him now. We don’t have much in terms of a description,” said Philadelphia Police Commissioner John Ramsey.

The commissioner says the unnamed 15th district officer is home resting with his family after the brush with death. The commissioner says there's no doubt he's lucky to be alive.

“This officer's six years on the job, relatively new, but handled that, I don’t think anybody could have handled it any better, very fortunate that it didn't turn the other way. We're lucky this time,” said Philadelphia Police Commissioner John Ramsey.

Police have not released the name of the suspect that was killed. One suspect remains on the loose.
