Warren grandparents upset after grandchildren see racist graffiti at park

Posted: Updated:
WARREN, Mich. (WJBK) - Tuesday afternoon Bruce and Lubertha Callaway took their grandchildren to Shaw Park in Warren when they saw something they couldn't believe.

"I stood there just looking at it. I couldn't believe what I was seeing," says Lubertha.

"That's racism, and that's a hate crime," says Bruce. "The 'N' word, white power, swastikas [were] all over the place." Bruce says the words 'Kill black 'N' word' were also written on the playground equipment.

"I would rather I just [had] seen it, not my grand kids see it. Now they know what racism is," says Lubertha. Their grandchildren are just 5 and 8 years old.

"Shame on them. Shame on you for bring that to the children, shame on you," says Lubertha.

Warren Mayor Jim Fouts feels the same way. He is mad about this wrong and promises to make it right.

"I spoke to the DPW director. We have zero tolerance toward graffiti, particularly racial graffiti. We'll be out and we'll clean it up first thing tomorrow. In addition, I spoke to the deputy police commissioner and he said he will have surveillance unit out here and he suspects it is probably youth doing this. But whether it's youth or adults, it is unacceptable. I don't want anybody doing this in the city of Warren and I have zero tolerance for it, and I want to personally apologize to the couple who had to view that with their children. It's just unacceptable and it's not Warren in 2014. I don't even know if it was Warren in 1954, but it certainly isn't Warren today and I think good citizens of Warren are outraged just like I am and just like the couple is," Fouts says.

"I know it's just a few ignorant people. I'm not going to stop bringing my kids up to have fun. No one will dictate what I do with my grandchildren. We're going to still come to this park and enjoy the park," says Lubertha.

The Callaways say they hope no one runs from a place they love because of racism, and also hope that police catch those who are responsible.
