Overnight Storms Bring Down Trees, Flood Apartment Building

Posted: Updated:

Those sure were some strong storms that blew through our area overnight.

Video is from one of our editors, Michele Green, who mounted her cell phone to the dash, shows lightning lighting up the night sky and the heavy rain pouring on Interstate 476, near the Norristown exit.

The storms made for some pretty dangerous driving conditions.

About 23,000 people in our area were without power early Monday morning.

And some residents will be on cleanup duty today after the storms ripped through their neighborhoods.

An apartment building in center city has been evacuated due to flooding because of heavy rain overnight.

This happened at the Midtown Apartments at 12th and Walnut streets. Water on the roof began leaking into the building around four this morning.

Three dozen people are currently displaced.

And in Medford, Burlington County, a tree fell on a house. A tree fell onto a corner section of the roof around 1:30 a.m. on Christopher Mill Road. That was around the same time that the power went out in this neighborhood.

FOX 29's Jennifer Joyce reported the homeowners packed up their car and took off in the early morning because they said they had water coming into their home. But, fortunately, no one was hurt.

A township employee said the neighborhood, named Hoot Owl, is a mess. Power is out throughout. Apparently transformers were blowing all night, and power lines are lying across the roadway.

A lot of cleanup around is expected there throughout the day, Joyce reported.
