This woman has spunk!  Some call Susan Sparks a modern day dynamo.  She was a lawyer who became a comedian, and then a minister.  This weekend, she graced the stage in Charlotte, performing before a crowd of nearly two thousand at the Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America Triennial Gathering.

Susan says she discovered the link between law and comedy after a decade in the courtroom. “I actually started doing standup as a lawyer. I realized juries responded to stand up.  I started studying stand up there.”

Soon, Susan felt the call to the pulpit. “Ministers and comedians have the same job… just different clients.”  Sparks took the call seriously.  She earned a Masters of Divinity.  “When I got a call to seminary, that’s when it got complicated, because the church and humor didn’t necessarily go together. But I found, the church is hungry for it.”  As it turns out, members of Susan’s church – the Historic Madison Avenue Baptist Church in Manhattan – find comic relief from the pulpit refreshing.  Susan is the first woman to serve as Senior Pastor of the church.  Believe it or not. Susan still performs stand up.

Susan’s book, Laugh Your Way to Grace: Reclaiming the Spiritual Power of Humor sold out during the Women of the ELCA Gathering in Charlotte over the weekend.  You can still get a copy of the book on amazon.com.
