San Clemente, Calif.- The Orange County Sheriff’s Department says porcelain dolls are being left on the doorsteps of numerous residences in the Talega community of San Clemente.

According to authorities, the dolls hold an eerie resemblance to young girls who live in the homes.

Officers released photos of some of the dolls on Thursday.

Police say the dolls have been left at eight homes. According to investigators, the girls they believe are being targeted are around 10 years old; however, they have not been able to find a connection between the eight families.

UPDATE: The Case of The Porcelain Dolls Has Been Cracked

Turns out, it was just a good deed the went badly. All of the families go to the same church. A churchgoer, a woman, was going through her closet and had lots of dolls. She matched up the dolls with kids. Red-haired dolls with red-headed kids. Blonde dolls with blonde kids. And, like Santa, she left them on porches as gifts.

That was it. It was “good intentioned” said authorities.

Happy ending except for the good Samaritan whose a little red-faced.
