West End Salisbury Community Meets, Police Pledge to Open Substation

Posted: Updated:

Wednesday night several community organizations in Salisbury's West End got together to host a meeting to talk about how to combat violence, drugs, and gangs. Also, Wednesday the Salisbury Police Department announced it is opening a police substation in the West End.

At Wednesday's meeting Master Trooper Clee Atkinson Jr. with NC Highway Patrol talked to residents about recognizing gang activity and Alex Clark, a former prison inmate, also spoke. There was an open forum to discuss community concerns. Several residents spoke about bringing back more activities for youth at the Miller Recreation Center and Livingstone College.

Kenny Hardin, with a community group called the Chamber, said change has to come from within the West End community. Hardin said, "It has to come from the people that live in the community. We are the ones that hear the gunshots. We're the ones that are here."

Jill Tindal attended the meeting. She grew up in the West End and fears for her grandchildren and the rest of her family still living there. Tindal said, "It bothers me that I have to take them to my house to know that they're safe."

People who attended the meeting completed surveys about their feelings on the West End and how to make improvements. Organizers will gather that information to decide which steps to take next in trying to make the area safer.
