Cabarrus County Church Growing Food For The Hungry As Need Increases

Posted: Updated:

Central United Methodist Church in Concord has raised, harvested, and donated 1600 pounds of food since May to the Cooperative Christian Ministry's Food Pantry. The church has a plot of land at the Elma C. Lomax Incubator Farm, and volunteers plant okra, squash, tomatoes, and other vegetables to donate to the food pantry.

CCM tells My Fox Carolinas the number of households served at the food pantry this year is up 22% compared with 2012. Last year's numbers were higher, but CCM says those are a misnomer because more people sought services last year after they were late getting food stamps because of a statewide system conversion.

This is the third year Central UMC has had the plot of land at Lomax farm, and this spring's crop has been the most plentiful of all.

Dan Barrier heads up the all-volunteer team at the farm for Central UMC. Barrier said, “A lot of children don’t have access to fresh produce, and to me, this is the most healthy thing you can eat.”

William Bowman gets food for his family of five when he needs to at the CCM pantry. He said, “I pretty much live pay day to pay day, as far as foodwise goes. I try to get enough to last the two weeks. but sometimes my kids get hungry."
