Some people are taking in the sunny rays at the beach while some are hitting the tanning beds.

There is a growing trend in Charlotte to get a glowing look....spray tanning.

Erika Suhr is the general manager of "Botanical Tan" in South Charlotte. However, she worked in a tanning bed salon as a teenager.

"Tanning beds are awful. There's actually a 300% chance, higher chance, of skin cancer, if you're in the bed for ten minutes, ten times a year," said Suhr.

Tanning beds not have the risk of skin cancer but also skin damage.

"It's just aging your skin. You have this grayish color to your skin. You look scaly. You're dry," said Suhr.

Suhr decided to branch off into spray tanning as a healthier alternative to UV rays. Suhr says originally there were only five places in Charlotte that offered spray tanning, not there are 15. The growth could be a Hollywood influence.

"It's celebrity driven so anybody who is you know is looking at any of these magazines or you know watching all of this reality TV, everyone is getting a spray tan," said Suhr.

But is it safer?  Some are skeptical because of chemicals in various sprays that aren't natural.

Dr. Charles Berigier of Novant Health says “this active ingredient in these spray-on tans is called DHA and DHA is a chemical in some people that has been thought to cause some sensitivity in the lungs which could actually trigger an asthma attack or difficulty breathing.”

Dr. Berigier recommends keeping your eyes, nose, and mouth covered if you do spray tan.

For the most part, Dr. Berigier dispels rumors that spray tanning is just as unsafe as tanning beds.

“Probably overall, this is probably safer than being out there, exposed to ultra-violet radiation,” says Dr. Berigier.
