The Charlotte Hornets may have missed on Utah’s Gordon Hayward, but they most certainly didn’t stop their pursuit of big name free agents, and now they’ve landed one.

The Hornets have signed shooting guard Lance Stephenson to a 3-year, $27.45 million deal, myFoxCarolinas has learned. Stephenson’s deal is for $9 million in each of the first two years, with a team option for the third year, at $9.45 million. A league source confirmed the terms of the deal.

Stephenson, 23, spent the first four years of his NBA career with the Indiana Pacers.  He averaged 13.8 points per game last year, as his role expanded with Indy.

Stephenson also adds a rebounding element to the Hornets, as he pulled down better than seven boards per game last year, in just over 35 minutes per game.

The Hornets have been looking to add a sharp-shooting wing player to their starting lineup since the season came to a close. In Stephenson, they add more than just that.  The 6’5 shooting guard shot 35 percent from three point range in 2013-14, but he also brings a slashing presence to the Hornets offense, in addition to his ability to distribute (he averaged 4.6 assists per game in ’13-’14).

Stephenson does bring more than his on-court capabilities to Charlotte.  He’s had his fair share of antics during his four years in Indiana, particularly in the recent seasons.  But reports indicate that any concerns the Hornets had were alleviated during face-to-face meetings with the guard in the past couple days.

The Pacers had offered Stephenson a 5-year, $44 million deal. He turned that down, in hopes he’d be paid more handsomely.

Stephenson’s deal with the Hornets was first reported by Rick Bonnell of the Charlotte Observer.
