Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Gives Back to the Community

Posted: Updated:

Uptown Charlotte will be covered in pink & green for the next week. More than 11,000 Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority members are in town for the organization's 66th Boule.

The theme of the week is "Global Leadership Through Timeless Service." It is a theme AKA's members are proud to be a part of.

"That's what we're about," said AKA Sister Keisha Kirkpatrick. "We're a service to all mankind, everywhere."

Saturday AKA held a benefit golf tournament and the Stop Hunger Now service project for International Mandela Day. The golf tournament was at the Ballantyne Golf Club with all proceeds going to AKA's Educational Advancement Foundation. The EAF funds scholarships to help continue college educations and funds community assistance grants.

Stop Hunger Now is the sorority's commitment to fight global hunger. Over 1,000 members and volunteers packaged 100,000 meals for the worlds hungry. It is being commemorated as "International Mandela Day" in tribute to the late global icon, Nelson Mandela.

North and South Carolina have a battle over the border going on. Where Gaston County, North Carolina meets York County, South Carolina is up in the air. The Ourfalian family lives just on the edge of that boundary. They have two addresses.
