The town of Spencer in Rowan County is considering a plan that would use goats to eat kudzu that's growing all around the town's ecological park.
The town passed an amendment to its ordinance this week that would temporarily allow the goats in the public space for this particular project. A fence would be put up to keep the goats in. As many as six goats would be used for periods of about four weeks possibly three times a year.
Spencer Town Manager Larry Smith said, “It actually works very well. A lot of municipalities have used it. I think the state and some of the forest service agencies have used it as well. Much more beneficial than spraying, and you don’t get all the chemicals in the ground.”
This plan is not a done deal and would need further approval and a contract with a company to provide the goats to eat the kudzu. Further discussions about the plan could take place in about month.?
