If you live along Mallard Creek Church Road, you have seen many changes in the last few years. The I-485 extension project has been underway since 2010 and it's now in it's final portion in the Mallard Creek area. It's causing headaches for one family though.

Traffic and parking problems are causing a lot of issues for passengers heading to Charlotte-Douglas International Airport.

Orange construction cones and detours are a common sight at the airport as several projects are in progress to expand.

For Marcellus Jones, traveling from San Diego, it’s causing a delay. “"It's so there's not enough room to get in and out and maneuver in and out and once you pass someone at baggage claim, it's almost like another 45 minutes to circle and pick them up,” said Jones.

Jones said he had been waiting forty minutes to get picked up by his friend because of traffic at the airport.

Charlotte-Douglas International Airport Director, Brent Cagle, says there is an increased passenger count at the airport but they understand the public’s frustration. In fact, it was a topic at Thursday night’s meeting.

"We certainly understand their frustration. These projects were started many years ago and at this point the best course of action is to complete them,” said Cagle.

Cagle also sees the traffic flow.

"Roadways are still congested; there are heavy loads at parking facilities," said Cagle at the Airport Commission meeting Thursday night.

There are many projects going on right now at the airport.  A big one: the hourly parking deck.  It will have 7,000 spaces and include 7 parking levels. It is scheduled to open this winter.  The wintry weather earlier this year caused delays in the project but Cagle says the deck is on schedule.

The second Business Valet Deck is scheduled to open at the end of the year.  It wil cost $40 million and will have more than 3,000 spaces.

To make sure your trip goes smooth, arrive early to the airport and look for signs to guide you.
