Metal chisel injures woman at recreation center

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A woman was nearly struck by a flying piece of metal while working out at the Asphalt Green recreational center on Manhattan's Upper East Side.

Robin Cocking, 59, narrowly avoided being hit by a chisel that pierced through the fourth floor window of the center on Wednesday. Surveillance footage showed shards of glass rain down on Cocking, who suffered cuts to her body.

Many residents of the area surrounding Asphalt Green have been opposed to the construction of a nearby marine trash transfer station. Work at the site where the chisel came from was temporarily halted.

Critics of the waste transfer station say hundreds of trucks should not allowed to haul garbage in a neighborhood that is already congested with high-rise buildings, public housing and a sports complex.

“Officials had documented 'many safety issues and unsafe conditions tied to the construction,” said Carol Tweedy, former executive of Asphalt Green, to the New York Post.

Protestors gathered near the construction site on Thursday morning, blocking the entrance before police escorted them away.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
