Group says Union Co. Board of Ed. altered redistricting maps

Posted: Updated:
The group Citizens for Adequate Public Schools that is suing Union County County Public Schools and the Board of Education says the B.O.E. altered map lines that determine which schools certain homes/individuals will attend.

Plaintiffs say the redistricting plan was done illegally because there was never a public vote on these lines being redrawn.

C.A.P.S says that the B.O.E. made “exceptions for numerous prominent individuals, land developers and influential churches holding residential properties. Lines were selectively altered without public explanation. There changes are significant when one realizes how many properties were actually affected, including multiple properties for several owners. This was not about exceptions for individual children or families, this was about exceptions for property owners concerned about their property valuations. Certain individuals and entities were granted exceptions to a “no exceptions” policy, while the public at large was ignored.”

C.A.P.S says that at least 180 properties in-total were affected in the Cuthbertson, Parkwood, Piedmont, Sun Valley and Monroe school clusters.

The group has filed its preliminary injunction and is looking for the redistricting decision to be prohibited until the B.O.E. “rectifies the violation of public records law.”

We reached out to the Union County Board of Education this morning and did not receive comment.
