Charlotte Hornets first round draft pick PJ Hairston will reportedly face misdemeanor assault charges after an alleged assault during a pickup game this weekend. The former North Carolina guard reportedly punched a high school senior during a pickup basketball game in Durham on Sunday, Yahoo! reports.

Hairston is accused of punching Kentrell Barkley of Northern Durham. Barkley is 17 years old.

Hairston is due in Durham County Court on August 8. He apologized to the fans in a statement released by the team.

“I want to apologize to the Hornets organization and our fans for creating this distraction," Hairston said. "As this is now a legal matter, I cannot comment on the situation any further. I am truly sorry for any embarrassment that I have caused.”

The team also released a statement regarding the incident.

“The organization is aware of the charges filed against P.J. Hairston regarding yesterday’s incident. It is a legal matter and we will have no further comment until the legal process has run its course.”

Marc J. Spears of Yahoo! reported Sunday that Hairston's agent Juan Morrow confirmed the altercation.  Morrow said Hairston punched Barkley after Barkley threw a punch first.

Hairston is slated to participate in the NBA Summer League later this week in Las Vegas.
