Safe Boating on Lake Norman

Posted: Updated:

July the 4th is arguable the busiest holiday on the lake. It is the middle of summer and usually the hottest time of the year. People come from all around the area to cool off and have a good time. Though, that good time can quickly turn dangerous if safety is not a top priority.

"I always make sure I keep my head on a swivel," said boater and father Michael Thompson.

Thompson recently took a boater safety class that goes through the basics of boating and also touches on lots of safety precautions that he never thought of.

"It was really surprising what I didn't know," said Thompson

That class is what the Lake Norman Volunteer Fire Department's Deputy Chief Kevin Clark recommends for anyone that puts a boat into the water.

"It's important for people to know what's proper on the waterways in North Carolina," said Clark

Clark also said this year has see less accidents to date than last year. LNVFD received and responded to approximately 800 calls in 2013.
