Shelby Teen Starts Business

Posted: Updated:

While most teens are enjoying their summer break by the pool or playing video games, one Shelby teen is having the same amount of fun while working.

Morgan Gettys is 17-years-old and prides herself on being self-sufficient. "I don't like asking my parents for money," Morgan says. "I live out in the middle of nowhere if I have a job somewhere I'll have to drive out in the middle of Shelby and what I make, I'll have to put back in gas."

Shocking for a teen right? Well it doesn't stop there. Morgan didn't just get a "summer job, " instead she opened her own store, Floosie Girls, selling original embroidered items and women clothing. Morgan says the idea to open the store started as fun hobby with her mom. "A couple of years ago my mom was teaching me how to sew and we made little girls dresses and we decided we wanted to monogram little girls dresses and that's how we got into the embroidery business."

Morgan's mom, Dana, helped her launch the store and says at nine-years-old Morgan talked about owning her own business. "She got some finger nail polish, and she would paint my nails, my mother's nails, and anyone else," Dana says. "After she was done we will give her a little bit of money."

So far Morgan says being a business owner is fun, but admits it can be difficult at times with school work. "It's a lot of stress with school and everything," Morgan says. "I do make A's and B's and I have a 3.55 Grade Point Average."

With all the options in her store, one thing's for sure, she's got her customers all stitched up. "Morgan is very nice and very good at her job, " Doris Weaver says. "I love the jewelry. I love the clothes." Another customer says, "it's so nice to have something very close by and I like that she has different items that you couldn't find in your general store or mall."

Morgan graduates from Burns High School next year and has even bigger plans in store. "I plan to go to a community college for two years and then I plan to transfer to UNC Greensboro and get a business degree."

If you chain your dog outside and you live in Kannapolis, there are new regulations being put in place to ensure your pup is safe when you leave the yard. Many people chain their dog outside for only a few minutes, but others leave their dogs outside in the heat for the entire day. The Humane Society in Concord has seen 5-6 dogs die due to strangulation from their chains in recent months. Though the City of Kannapolis has not had any formal complaints of dogs chained for long periods of time,...
