The man police believe shot and killed a popular restaurant owner appeared before a Fulton County judge Thursday.
According to East Point police, Yusuf Abdul Alkarim shot Riyadh Nuriddin in his restaurant “Iklaus” on Sylvan Avenue during a robbery.
Many in the community learned about the July 2 death and were stunned at the news. They say he was a pillar in the community.
The victim's family and friends filled the courtroom Thursday. They say Nuriddin was influential in the community and even offered to help the suspect when he was looking for work.
Investigators believe Alkarim took money, chicken and fish from the restaurant, then shot Nuriddin in the head.
Police say Alkarim held another man at gunpoint the night of the robbery, but he was able to escape.
Alkarim faces ten counts, including felony murder, armed robbery and aggravated assault.
The case is scheduled to be back in court August 21.
