9-year-old Fairfax girl battling brain cancer getting wish to swim with dolphins

RESTON, Va. -

Wednesday was a big day for 9-year-old Tara Sankner. The little girl has been battling Astrocytoma, an inoperable form of brain cancer, for most of her life. Today was not only her last day of chemotherapy, but she also had her wish granted by the Make-a-Wish Foundation.

Tara’s wish is to go to Hawaii and swim with dolphins and thanks to United Healthcare working with Make-a-Wish, Tara is getting her wish.

On Wednesday, a group with United Healthcare and Make-a-Wish threw Tara a party with all of her favorite things to celebrate her big trip.

According to Tara’s mother, Tammy, this trip will be one of celebration and relaxation now that Tara is done with chemotherapy. She also says that she hopes this can be a time for her little girl to be just that -- a little girl. Tammy says any little kid that grows up with cancer has to grow up too fast.

Tara and her entire family will leave for Hawaii at the end of July, and Tara will get to swim with the dolphins…twice!
