The American Red Cross is preparing for the first tropical storm of the year. A hurricane watch has been issued the Carolina coasts as well.

The Red Cross says preparing means getting ready for anything that may happen. They sent out a list of items to have in an emergency kit in case disaster hits. Here are the items: water, flashlight, first-aid kit, blankets, can opener, emergency radio, extra batteries, medication, personal hygiene items, clean up supplies, map, and rain gear.

The Red Cross has a 120 hour planning timeline for the hurricane. They are currently identifying potential evacuation shelters in South Carolina and North Carolina. Make sure you’re avoiding hazardous water conditions.

Angela Bloome, CEO of the Red Cross, says to hold off on any traveling, if possible.

“Preparedness is the key word. We’re not telling people don’t go. Because we don’t know what the storm is going to do at this point. Get ready,” Bloom said.

The Red Cross is encouraging everyone in the Carolinas to avoid hazardous water conditions.
