The Islamic holy month of Ramadan has already started. It will last for 30 days starting from June 29.

During Ramadan, Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset. This means no eating or drinking during sunlight hours.

They gather at mosques to pray and mentally dedicate themselves to the purpose of the fast – to cleanse the soul and get closer to their faith.

Islam is based on the lunar calendar, so Ramadan starts at different times during the Gregorian calendar.

Ramadan is considered one of the five pillars of Islam, the others being identifying as a Muslim, giving to charities, prayer, and attending the holy pilgrimage to Mecca.

There are about 1.6 billion Muslims worldwide, according to the Pew Research Center.

Islam is the second largest religion in North Carolina.
