A Community Remembers Their Teacher

Posted: Updated:

Death is never a way people want to come together, but it is death that builds strength. Although questions can be asked with not many answers given, the ones left behind cherish the memories made with their loved one.

The unexpected death of teacher Maggie Daniels was one that did just that.

"Tremendous loss to our community, tremendous loss to our students, and to us as adults," said HR director for Newton-Conover City Schools Dr. Sylvia White. "You don't lose an individual that has the magnitude and impact on students in the community like Maggie Daniels without just being describable."

A memorial was held today at Discovery High School in Newton where Daniels was a guidance counselor. Before becoming a counselor she was an English teacher at Newton-Conover High School where she won "Teacher of the Year 2011" for both the high school and the district.

"Everybody bonded so much with her," said student Olivia Abernethy. "She wasn't a teacher she was a friend."

Students, teachers, and parents came together to remember the life of Daniels. They had time to talk with each other, and if needed, speak with grief counselors. Students also put together a large poster board with hand written messages for their beloved teacher.

"She was a beautiful person," said Abernethy. "We will all miss her."

Newton Police are still investigating the death of Daniels and hope to release more information after an autopsy that is currently scheduled for Monday, June 30.
