Five seats will be open on the nine-member Union County Board of Education for the November election and the filing period begins on Friday, June 27 at noon.

This comes after a controversial school redistricting decision that will shift thousands of students to different schools this fall, as well as a lawsuit currently under appeal with the county of $91 million and a lawsuit against a group of plaintiffs representing Citizens for Adequate Public Schools.

"I think this is the most visible and you will have more involvement, which is good, we need voter involvement," At-Large hopeful Leslie Boyd said. "I think you're going to see that there's a lot of people that are going to come out and this is definitely a transitional time here in Union County."

The filing period ends on Friday, July 25. For additional information, contact the Board of Elections at (704) 283-3809.
