FOXe: Why tomatoes could soon help make car parts

Posted: Updated:
DEARBORN, Mich. (WJBK) -  Tomatoes are the main ingredient in ketchup, and in the future they could also be an ingredient in sustainable auto parts.

Ford Motor Company is collaborating with Heinz to use leftover tomato fibers from ketchup production. Every year, Heinz processes more than 2 million tons of tomatoes and a lot is leftover, including the skins, stems and seeds which Ford is testing.

VIDEO: Fox 2's Robin Schwartz visited Ford Motor Company's Polymer Processing Lab in Dearborn to see firsthand how tomato fibers are turned into sustainable bioplastic.

The product is still in the research and development stage right now but we're told you could see it in Ford vehicles within the next few years.

Ford already makes parts out of coconut fibers, cellulose and recycled cotton. They also use a soy-based foam for seat cushions.
