Snyder signs laws protecting gun owners' privacy

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) - Governor Rick Snyder on Tuesday signed into law an NRA pack of bills giving gun owners more privacy.

These new laws make fire arms records like licensing, registration and concealed carry permitting -- information once accessible by requests under the Freedom of Information Act -- now completely confidential. The information is available only to law enforcement for investigative purposes.

"Our business is our business and how many firearms a person owns, I think, is their business and we've got to keep in mind this is just handguns that are affected by this law. Long guns, rifles, are not registered in Michigan," Bill Kucyk, who owns Action Impact in Southfield, says.

State Representative Jim Townsend disagrees, though, and believes the discussion should be centered around a different gun issue. He says, "We didn't need this bill. What we need, instead, is to close the loophole in the background check legislation that we have."

The new laws are a pre-emptive strike against overzealous anti-gun activists and media organizations. An map pinpointing the home addresses of every gun owner in New Yorks' Westchester and Rockland counties has been posted. A newspaper website also posted an interactive map in 2012 shortly after the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut.

Gun owners across the country cried foul.

In a statement, Chris Cox the Executive Director of the NRA praised Gov. Snyder thanking him for "ensuring that law abiding gun owners are protected from unwarranted scrutiny and discrimination merely for exercising their constitutional right to keep and bear arms."
