Laborers kick off 'Fix Our Roads' tour in Detroit

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) -  It's a problem here in Michigan and across the country: roads and bridges crumbling at an alarming rate.

Our highway system was built 40 to 50 years ago and it can't last forever.

Now, labor is turning up the heat on Washington and state government to fix our roads. Union workers are on a tour to point out the problem areas in our roads and bridges.

"Poor road conditions like potholes contribute to a third of traffic fatalities," says Mike Aaron of Laborers Local.

The tour group brought a visual to Michigan: the front of a school bus crushed by a section of falling bridge. Compelling to look at, horrifying to think of it actually happening.

"We're not trying to scare people. We are only trying to wake them up," says Aaron.

The prop is part of a campaign by the Laborers' International Union of North America to press Congress to pass a long-term, full-investment Highway Bill this year. The prop features a real school bus, which has been crushed and carries a prop resembling a large piece of a fallen bridge.

Michigan is a hot spot for this sort of rallying at the moment because our lawmakers in Lansing didn't act before summer break.
