I got so sick of the Canadian cold, I moved down to Charlotte just to avoid the snow. And of course to join the My Fox Carolinas family as a Digital Journalist. I grew up in Calgary (think the Houston of Canada) and after graduating from Carleton University with a Bachelor of Journalism, I moved to Toronto to cover sports; which in Canada means hockey.

To some, the violence in Gaza seems a world away, but to one family here in Charlotte it is hitting far too close to home.

Charlotte, NC -

If you commute on I-85 you’ve probably already noticed that construction the Cabarrus County area looks about done. It’s back to 4 lanes, and the speed limit is back to 65 miles per hour. Traffic is flowing more freely on this section of I-85, but there is still construction left to be done on two intersections: Highway 73 and Poplar Tent Road.

They're putting in 'Diverging Diamond' Intersections. The North Carolina Department of Transportation says these intersections will alleviate some traffic at these on and off ramps.

"Basically what it does is eliminate a lot of the waiting at stop lights when you come off an interstate, so the backups onto the ramps are gonngoing toless," said NCDOT spokeswoman Jen Thompson.

These intersections were supposed to be finished by June 23, but Thompson says crazy winter weather caused some unexpected delays.

"There’s a lot you can’t do when there’s 8 inches of snow on the ground. But the primary operations at that point... we were looking at trying to pave, maybe trying to put down pavement markings, and even in temperatures that cold, even if we didn’t have snow, there are a lot of limitations to what you can do," Thompson said.

If all goes accoaccordingschedule, Thompson says the last of the construction at these two intersections should be finished by September 21.

A bill requiring insurance to cover a popular educational therapy for children with autism passed overwhelmingly in the North Carolina House but it may die with lawmakers leaving soon for home for the summer. The North Carolina Senate never put the bill up for a vote.
