Claremont Raises Money for Scholarships

Posted: Updated:

Trucks, trucks and more trucks. The city of Claremont held the inaugural "Touch-a-Truck" event to showcase police, fire, EMS, and commercial tractor trailers to kids and parents.

The event featured over 30 different types of heavy machines from lawn mowers to race cars. As fun as that sound, the reason for the event was to honor and remember a local hero.

James "PJ" Stanley was a 30+ year veteran of police, fire, and EMS in Claremont and Catawba County. He passed away in 2011 and the town of Claremont decided to put together a scholarship in his honor.

"We started this (scholarship) in 2012 and the funds have given away eight scholarships," said Claremont City Manager Doug Barrick.

The PJ Stanley Memorial Scholarship is given to Claremont area graduating high school seniors going into the EMS, police, or fire service field and that will attend a local community college to begin their career.
