Public Swimming Coming to Lake Norman?

Posted: Updated:

If all goes according to plan, public swimming could soon happen at Lake Norman. The Ramsey Creek Park in Cornelius is the site for this proposed one acre (22,000 sq. feet of both beach and water; 6" depth with a 0 depth entry) for a public beach.

"The community is ready for it and has been asking for it," said Lee Jones with Mecklenburg County Parks & Recreation who is the lead planner of the project.

This would be the first public beach on the 520-mile shoreline lake since the 1970s. Drownings and other injuries were the result in closing those beaches.

Meck Co. Parks & Rec plan on much safer results by placing four to five lifeguards around the beach during the daytime swimming hours. The county has also budgeted $425,700 for the design and construction of the beach.

The only thing stopping the construction is a final approval from the state and federal levels, regardless Jones says they plan on opening the beach to the public by summer 2016.
