If you live along Mallard Creek Church Road, you have seen many changes in the last few years. The I-485 extension project has been underway since 2010 and it's now in it's final portion in the Mallard Creek area. It's causing headaches for one family though.

Five continents. 35,000 people around the world.

That's how many are participating in the World's Largest Swim Lesson and 52 of them are at Charlotte Aquatics.

The temperatures are climbing but so are these kids' hopes to break a world record.

"Both of my daughters were in it and so I had to explain to them what the Guinness Book of World Records was but to be part of it is awesome as cool as swim lessons," said Kellie Hoover, a parent of a swimmer participating.

Around the world,  between 11:00 and 11:30 am, people jumped in.  The goal is not only to make the record books but to also bring awareness to the importance of swimming lessons.

"Swimming lessons actually do save lives. Um, swimming lessons reduce the risk of drowning by 88 percent," said Charlotte Aquatics owner, Kelly Gaines.

Some kids are learning to swim before they even know how to walk.  They teach kids as young as six months old.

"Children should learn to float at a minimum, how to climb out of a pool, how to swim a few yards so they could save themselves if they ever fall off a boat or somebody pushes them in the pool," said Gaines.

The lessons give parents, like Hoover, a peace of mind when their child enters the pool.

'I can sit back a little more relaxed and watch her have a good time and not be nervous about her being in the pool," said Hoover.

That fun includes trying to break the world record from Charlotte.

We won't know for another month or so if the world record was broken but I'll keep you up to date on my Facebook page at facebook.com/amandaoharaonfox46carolinas and on my Twitter at @OHaraFOX46.
