Child in pit bull attack speaks out

PHOENIX (KSAZ) - Twenty-eight stitches, three of them on his head, fifteen on his left hand, but Ruben Moreno is alive.

"It hurts, my hand hurts," he said.

Ruben is still in pain, and the six year-old bitten by a pit bull while playing in the backyard at a family members house in Phoenix.

"He barked, and he jumped on me," said Moreno.

"He was just crying; he actually didn't even respond to me," said Merlene Mercado.

Ruben's mom Merlene Mercado first thought Ruben fell. Then she says she realized he'd been bitten when she saw a white dog in the backyard that she had never seen before.

"When I saw the dog I was like wow, it was a pretty big dog," said Mercado.

Mercado said the stray must have jumped the backyard fence.

"I was trying to get the dog in his house, I hit him, he didn't respond, he jumped on me, and he cut my head and my face," said Moreno.

Ruben said all he could think about was protecting his 4 year-old brother who was also playing outside with him.

"Trying to save my brother, and I love him," he said.

Paramedics rushed Ruben to the hospital; animal control came and took the pit bull away.

"He grabbed him by the temple, imagine he would have killed him or something," said Mercado.

"I'm so lucky and grateful that my son is alive," she said.

The pit bull is considered a stray and if no one comes forward to claim him he will be put down or put up for adoption.
