PHOENIX (KSAZ) - We first heard about an Arizona Department of Corrections employee being sexually assaulted in January. At the time, we were not given details surrounding the attack.

On Thursday, we learned that a teacher was left by herself with a dozen sex offenders and no guard nearby. There also were no cameras monitoring the classroom.

Now critics blame DOC for what happened.

Jacob Harvey was accused in the sexual assault of the teacher. The Associated Press reports that the teacher was left alone with a classroom full of sex offenders before she was stabbed at raped at Eyman Prison.

Former Deputy Warden Carl Toersbijns said DOC did not have proper security in place including no cameras and no guards.

"In this case the teacher was put in an out of sight, out of mind, type of situation inside a classroom that should have been monitored.

The AP report says that the teacher was administering a high school exam. After the class cleared out Harvey allegedly stabbed her using a pen and raped her.

The Department of Corrections said in a statement, "The ADC referred this case to the Pinal County Attorney for prosecution, and it is the inmate-suspect who will be held accountable for this despicable act."

But Toersbijns said the department should also be held accountable in the attack.

"Of course they are responsible for what happened, they are the agency in charge of this inmates behavior, and they put him in a situation where the risk was heightened rather than lowered," he said.

He also said that the inmate should have been considered a higher risk, the inmate was serving a 30 year prison sentence for rape. DOC said they would not comment on the details of the sexual assault while it is being prosecuted.
