Cereal: Not just for breakfast anymore?

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Many people have grown up eating cereal for breakfast, but what about for dinner or even as a snack? It's one way that marketers are trying to boost declining cereal sales in the U.S.

Pouring a big cold bowl of cereal brings many people back to their childhood.

The colorful boxes and jar of milk on the counter only meant one thing - breakfast. And while cereal continues to be the number one breakfast item in America, less and less people are eating it. Sales are already down 3 percent compared to last year.

Some blame it on our society's change in diet, and others said they simply don't have enough time.

“That's crazy, cereal is so easy to eat. You just grab a bowl. I disagree with that,” said cereal eater Avery Moss.

One 8-year-old said he knows why less people are eating cereal.

“Just because they don't think it has any more flavor. They like more fancy stuff and kids like regular cereal,” said Nolan Moss.

So, companies are trying to bring back old customers with new commercials.

“I grew up eating cereal, but as I got old I stopped,” said Wayne Wright.

Even though Glenna Diner is known for its cereal wall, the manager said it’s usually kids who order the cereal and it's most popular for breakfast and desert.

Brands are trying to sell cereal as a snack instead of only viewing it as a breakfast item, and for some it’s working.

"I like it in the morning and then at night. Instead of having a bowl of ice cream, I eat cereal because it’s got some health to it,” said Dave Simmons.
